(Cao Yurui)

I think the most important thing for graduates to do when choosing a career is to figure out what it is that interests and excites you. The experience you’ve gained throughout your college career must give you a pretty good idea of the ideas that spark your interest. Make a two-column list of one of the things that move you forward (your hobbies, interests, passions) and one of all the things you’re good at (your strengths, talents, and skills), and try to find a career that’s a match between the two. More information can be found on this website.

At WKU, most people will choose to continue their education after graduation, but some will choose to work directly after graduation. These people generally choose a career that they enjoy. In my case, I would like to work directly after graduation because I want to learn more things that I can’t learn from books at work and in the society.

To be honest, most students choose to apply for master degrees because they think that master degrees could help them to get a better and high-paying job. But I think that depends on your personal situations because not all students are fit to apply for master degrees. If you have decided to apply for the job after graduation, you also have two directions: find the jobs that are related to your major or find the jobs that do not have so many relationships between your major. Also, that depends on you because more than 60% of people would have jobs that are not directly related to their major. But I personally believe that the ability that you learn improved in your university is the most important thing for applying for a job.

peng yuanling

I would choose to do a few more internships to determine the direction I’m interested in. It’s not necessarily necessary to choose a career that fits perfectly with your major, but it’s best to choose a career that has some relevance to your major and has some barriers. This will not only showcase your strengths better, but also your career prospects will be better.

Postgraduate studies or work are good choices after graduation, based on personal circumstances. Continuing to study graduate school can increase your competitiveness in your industry and find a relatively higher-paying job. And if you work directly, you can accumulate more experience than those who go to graduate school. Both have their own advantages, depending on what the individual needs more.

It would be great if you can choose a job that you are interested in and you are suitable for. However, sometimes it might be hard to find a job like this. You can choose to do an internship first to find out what you are good at and accumulate relevant experiences. Do not waste your time on daydreaming. Do some actions!

If you are a WKUer, you are usually considering going to graduate school, but I decided to stay in China for a few years to work before considering going back to graduate school because I found a job that I am very happy with personally, and also in light of the bad pandemic this year. In fact, many of my friends around me have made this choice, and I previously met a teacher from an educational institution who herself worked for a few years and then decided to continue her studies abroad.

In view of the epidemic, it may be very difficult to study abroad in recent years, so after graduation, I may choose to stay and work in China, or I may also consider studying in China for postgraduate studies. As for the choice of work, I tend to prefer what I like, because if I do not like this job, I cannot do it with all my heart. It’s the same as choosing the subject you want to study in graduate school. You have to choose what you are interested in to do it for a long time.

However, I am not able to do that because of the pandemic. I would rather wait for several years than being quarantined at home in another country.

A multitude of students graduate from some excellent schools still feel pretty anxious for their jobs. I believe it is one quite common phenomenon because the fast development of society and massive information always shake your hearts and increase your hesitation of choosing some career. Therefore, I suggest before you choose one career, ask yourself about your initial aim and identify the significance you hope to get in the rest of your life. Some people want to practice their persiverance so they choose to join the army, some people believe it’s pretty cool to save lives so they choose doctor as their normal work, some people love money and dream of buying big houses and live an extravagant life so they go into the stock market to take a chance. Different people have different life significance and just respect yours and protect it.

I want to work directly, but the parents around me feel that a WKU diploma is not enough. If you are frustrated in your future work because of your academic qualifications or similar reasons, it is better to do all the preparations you should do all at once. In addition, I didn’t think about what kind of job I should do, or what kind of job is more suitable for me. It may take a while to learn what I am really good at. And before you work, you have to ask yourself, are you really ready to work five or even six days a week, and you can enjoy all-day rest for only a dozen days a year? After more time to prepare, with my strong professional knowledge and a deeper understanding of the industry, I will devote myself to an industry that will take a few years or more than a decade.

In my opinion, I may choose to find a job after I finish my bachelor’s degree. There are two reasons I consider to so. First, the COVID-19 blocks international communication, especially education. Thus, leave China and go study abroad became impossible for me. Second, the master project I prefer needs working experiences, which I cannot handle directly when I finish my bachelor’s degree. Because of these reasons, I prefer to find a job first, then consider having further study, no matter in China or a foreign country.

For me, I would like to go to the graduate school after graduating from WKU. That’s because I believe that during the study in WKU, I am learning all in English, which is good for me to prepare for the exams (TOEFL and GRE) needed to study abroad. Also, I can have a further understanding on what I have studied in WKU when learning abroad. Moreover, if I have a master’s degree, I will be more competitive when finding jobs in the future. I choose to study in the graduate school not only because I want to get better education but also because I want to broad my horizon and find out what kind of job I would like to do.

Actually, I think that your interests will determine your whole life, including your work. I suggest that you choose a career that you are interested in instead of selecting a career that everyone yearns for and want. Because you must understand that what career you choose is one thing that you will keep going for a whole life. If you apply for a job that you do not like, how can you work hard and feel enjoyable? Maybe now, the major you studied in the university is not your favorite, but you can try various jobs after graduating from the university. And the most important thing is to find out what you really want in your future. Do not care about others’ thoughts.

I think the future after graduation depends more on your major. Some majors require high academic qualifications, such as finance. At this time, it is better to choose a master’s degree. Some majors do not require high academic qualifications, so you can consider working first at this time. I think everyone’s career development plan should be based on their own interests. Personally, after finishing my undergraduate study, I will go to the United States to continue studying for a master’s degree in accounting. After graduating with a master’s degree, I am more inclined to directly enter the accounting field. Since most of the programs I applied for are STEM programs, I will choose to work in an accounting firm in the United States for a period of time to accumulate some experience. After that, I am more willing to choose to return back China to continue working. Because I am very interested in the field of accounting, my study plan and career plan will focus on this field.

I think the dilemma mentioned initially is meaningful to talk about. When I was very young, I would choose a job I was interested in without any hesitation. However, I have to admit that I become more realistic now. Actually, I am a person who values the independence, and I have a strong will to make a living on my own abilities. For me, relying too much on others equals to put my fate in the hands of others. Thus, according to my current thinking, I will not choose any job with a salary that is not enough to support my financial independence in the future. Besides this, ideally, we can take a more relaxed job in our favorite field as part-time work.
